What is stripping?

Stripping is a process to remove old floor wax/polish. It is essential to strip the floor before any maintenance or restoration works.

How to check if your floor is coated with floor wax or floor finish?

Floor finish/wax used to be popular in the past.

To check if your floor is coated, put a drop of alkali on an inconspicious area. If you observe a difference in appearance, the floor is coated. An alkaline based stripper would be appropriate in this case.

If there was no difference observed, put another drop of solvent. If you observe a difference in appearance, the floor coating is probably epoxy or urethane-based. Only a solvent based stripper would be able to strip the floor effectively.

*When using solvent based stripping agents, do take note that it cannot be used on vinyl (VCT) or resin tiles. To check for resin tiles, use a blow torch on an inconspicious area. If it burns and/or emits a plastic burning smell, resin might be present.
